Moriteru Ueshiba

Moriteru UeshibaDoshu

Moriteru Ueshiba is the grandson of Morihei Ueshiba, founder of Aikido, and the son of Kisshomaru Ueshiba. He was appointed Chairman of the Aikikai Foundation in 1996 and upon his father's passing on January 1999, he became the third Doshu of Aikido. He is also the President of the International Aikido Federation.

Mitsuteru Ueshiba

Mitsuteru UeshibaHombu Dojo-cho

Mitsuteru Ueshiba Waka Sensei is the great-grandson of Aikido's founder Morihei Ueshiba. In keeping with the Iemoto system, he is expected to succeed his father Moriteru Ueshiba as Doshu.

Hiroshi Tada Shihan

Hiroshi Tada9th Dan (Japan)

Hiroshi Tada Shihan started Aikido under Aikido's founder Morihei Ueshiba in Tokyo in 1948. He settled in Rome, Italy in 1964 and established the Italian central dojo in 1966. He moved back to Japan to teach at the Aikikai Hombu Dojo in 1973.

Yoshimitsu Yamada8th Dan (Japan)

Yoshimitsu Yamada was introduced to aikido through Tadashi Abe, one of the pre-war students of O Sensei Morihei Ueshiba. He entered the Hombu Dojo in 1955 at the age of 17.

Katsuaki Asai8th Dan (Japan)

Katsuaki Asai started training at the Aikikai Hombu Dojo in Tokyo under the guidance of Morihei Ueshiba when he was 13 years old, and continued his training there throughout his studies at Meiji University.

Morito Suganuma

Morito Suganuma8th Dan (Japan)

Morito Suganuma first started aikido in 1963 at the Asia University in Tokyo where he followed a class taught by Nobuyoshi Tamura. The next year, Tamura Sensei introduced him to the Aikikai Hombu Dojo where he started training under Morihei Ueshiba, Kisshomaru Ueshiba and other prominent Hombu instructors. He officially became an uchideshi in 1967 after graduating from university.

Toshiyuki Arai

Toshiyuki Arai8th Dan (Japan)

Toshiyuki Arai met Kaiso Morihei Ueshiba in 1957 and began Aikido in Tokyo. In 1962, he graduated from Tokyo National University of fine Arts and Music and he began teaching Aikido in Gunma prefecture in 1971.

Miyamoto Shihan

Tsuruzo Miyamoto8th Dan (Japan)

Tsuruzo Miyamoto started Aikido in 1971, at 18, when he entered the university of Fukuoka. For the next four years, he followed the teaching of Suganuma Mamoru Sensei, who was a delegate instructor of the Aikikai. Once he graduated, he entered the Aikikai Hombu Dojo in Tokyo.

Christian Tissier Shihan

Christian Tissier8th Dan (France)

Christian Tissier started training in Aikido as a child in 1962 under Masahiro Nakazono in Paris until he left for Tokyo in 1969. He came to Aikikai Hombu Dojo as an 18-year-old, and trained there for seven years. Among the teachers that have inspired him are Seigo Yamaguchi, Kisaburo Osawa and the second doshu Kisshomaru Ueshiba. While training at hombu dojo, he taught French language at a school and Institut Franco-japonais de Tokyo.

Yoshiaki Yokota7th Dan (Japan)

Yoshiaki Yokota Shihan started Aikido in 1970 at age 12 and entered the Hombu Dojo in 1977. He is teaching extensively abroad and served the International Aikido Federation as one of the technical advisors during the first Combat Games held in Beijing.

Ulf Evenas Shihan

Ulf Evenas7th Dan (Sweden)

Ulf Evenas Shihan started aikido in 1968 and went to Iwama dojo to study under Morihiro Saito Sensei in Japan in 1973. Evenas Shihan was one of the first foreign long-term close students of Saito Sensei. Since then he had returned to Japan and other countries of the world to study under Saito Sensei on a regular basis. Evenas Shihan studied under Saito Sensei for 29 years.

Yukimitsu Kobayashi

Yukimitsu Kobayashi7th Dan (Japan)

Kobayashi Yukimitsu started Aikido at age 18 as a law student at university under the direction of Masando Sasaki Shihan, a direct student of O Sensei Morihei Ueshiba. He entered the Hombu Dojo in 1982 and has been teaching there since.

Etsuji Horii7th Dan (Japan)

Etsuji Horii Shihan started Aikido at school in Osaka in 1978. In 1985, he enrolled at the Aikikai Hombu Dojo under the direction of Second Doshu Kisshomaru Ueshiba and spent the subsequent 10 years training and teaching in Tokyo.

Tony Smibert

Tony Smibert7th Dan (Australia)

Tony Smibert commenced judo in his early teens and then aikido in 1964 at age 15. He became a student of Seiichi Sugano in 1965 and remained his student until Sugano's death in 2010. Smibert assisted Sugano to establish in Aikido in Victoria then worked closely with other senior students to establish Aiki Kai Australia and the Aikido Foundation.

Yoko Okamoto Shihan

Yoko Okamoto6th Dan (Japan)

Yoko Okamoto was born in Japan and started practicing Aikido in 1978 at the Aikikai Hombu Dojo, under the direction of K. Ueshiba Doshu. She subsequently relocated in France where she studied under C. Tissier Shihan and moved back to Tokyo, where she continued to train at Honbu Dojo with all the Shihans in Honbu, in particular with S. Yamaguchi and I. Shibata Shihans. She moved to Portland, Oregon in 1989, established Portland Aikikai under the direction of Y.Yamada Shihan, then returned to Japan in 2003 establishing Aikido Kyoto.

Micheline Tissier

Micheline Tissier6th Dan (France)

Micheline Tissier began Aikido at age 15 at the Aikikai Hombu Dojo under the direction of Masuda Shihan and Ichihashi Shihan and later, with Yamaguchi Shihan. She was awarded the 6th Dan Aikikai in 2007 by Doshu Moriteru Ueshba.

Janet Clift

Janet Clift6th Dan (England)

Janet Clift started Aikido at the age of thirteen in Northern England. Shortly thereafter she also started training in Liverpool with Terry Ezra sensei. After two years in London under Kanetsuka Shihan, she moved to Tokyo to train at Aikikai Hombu Dojo. Living in close proximity to the Aikikai allowed for more training and less travelling so she was able to attend the classes of the legendary Shihan who were active at that time, Yamaguchi Sensei, Arikawa Sensei, Osawa Sensei, and of course Kisshomaru Ueshiba.
